KOMBATMAP

Crowdsourced, AI-filtered map empower real-time tactical data for Ukraine's defense while ensuring accuracy with manual verification

About the KOMBATMAP mapping project

Welcome to the forthcoming KOMBATMAP project, an initiative by Engineers for Ukraine (E4UA). Since February 2022, our dedicated team of volunteers has been meticulously designing a near real-time map displaying tactically significant data. This close alignment of the map's information with real-time events provides a dynamic and accurate reflection of the ground realities. This kind of data, of immense value in conflict scenarios, is primarily sourced directly from civilians present in the affected areas. Such first-hand, on-the-ground information offers an unmatched perspective on unfolding situations. The ultimate aim is to equip stakeholders with time-sensitive and critical data, thereby aiding in informed and strategic decision-making processes.

Central to KOMBATMAP is a sophisticated system of machine learning filters. These are expertly engineered to detect Russian military personnel and equipment, while simultaneously identifying and excluding false reports. In strict compliance with Ukrainian law, no information regarding the positions of Ukrainian forces is displayed on our map.

Our machine learning models, trained on a hand-sorted dataset comprising over 75,000 images, demonstrate object detection accuracy exceeding 95%. However, in our commitment to maintaining the highest standard of data integrity, we intend to include an additional layer of human verification. Prior to displaying on the map, each report will be reviewed by a team of volunteers, primarily European and American combat veterans, ensuring the utmost accuracy of every report.

Currently in its testing phase, the KOMBATMAP project is primed for expansion once the minimum viable product is complete. We have planned various extensions, including refining our machine learning models' abilities, establishing partnerships for data streaming, and developing tools such as an ATAK plug-in for direct data supply. We welcome your input on these proposed tools and any additional requirements you may have, to ensure that our schedule is aligned with your priorities.

The KOMBATMAP project operates on a not-for-profit basis, powered by the dedication and experience of approximately 60 volunteers from across North America, South America, Europe, and the Caucasus. Our commitment to collaborating with Ukrainian military units and civilians on the ground is unwavering, and we are resolute in ensuring the utility and security of our machine learning systems. We strive to provide crucial, verified information in the service of Ukraine.
