Questions & Answers

  • Please see our About us page for more information on our team and our mission.

  • Open source data refers to publicly available information that anyone can access, use, and share. This can include anything from news articles, blog posts, videos, satellite imagery, social media posts, radio broadcasts, government reports, academic articles, and more. The data is usually collected, verified, and analyzed to produce actionable intelligence.

On the other hand, crowdsourced data is a subtype of open source data, where information is obtained from a large group of people, typically via the Internet. This can involve contributions from a large number of individuals, voluntary or otherwise, and may come in forms like mapping data, eyewitness reports, or social media posts about specific events or locations.

Both of these data types are important for military intelligence for several reasons:

    1. Verification: Open source and crowdsourced data can be used to verify or corroborate intelligence gathered through other means, such as signals intelligence (SIGINT) or human intelligence (HUMINT). This is important for making sure the information is reliable before making decisions based on it.

    2. Timeliness: Both open source and crowdsourced data can often be collected and analyzed in near real-time, allowing for faster responses to rapidly changing situations.

    3. Cost-effectiveness: Collecting data this way can be much cheaper and less risky than other forms of intelligence collection, such as deploying spies or reconnaissance missions.

    4. Granularity: These data types can provide highly detailed information at the individual or community level, which can be valuable for understanding local conditions or attitudes.

    5. Complementarity: Open source and crowdsourced data can fill in gaps left by other forms of intelligence. For example, traditional intelligence might miss certain information that ordinary people on the ground are better placed to notice and report.

    6. Wide coverage: Open source data especially can cover a wide range of topics, areas, and sources, providing a broad view of the situation.
